Thanks for the stress induced heart failure, Edgar. I am still pulling my car apart and have a lot more work to do before I can test and I already told some guys I would be at Cecils first TnT on March 1st which only gives me 2 more weekends to get it all wrapped up...  Shocked

time is flying, I still have bare metal being delivered any day now and need to make time to turn that into parts, plus finish up the projects I have on the car. The part that really sucks is that my client just signed the paperwork for enhancments to another application that I need to build for them and it has a really tight deadline too. I have 2 weeks to get the specs (but I won't get the specs until tomorrow morning), build, and test the system, so that means a few late nights for the paycheck work and not counting anything on the car. Can you say no sleep in February for me...

Well, it is still winter.  Roll Eyes

Hell, we still have 4 to 6 weeks of winter left. Tracks are pretty green the first month of the new season, so I'm usually not in too much of a hurry to get out for the opening day events.

I'm lookin to get the boot for no roll bar  Wink on the 9th.. But traction my be hard to find with the brand new track... Last day there 12/1  I ran a 11.43 into a 15 mph head wind and got the look into the car at the line .. LOL ... And I just added a 3.91 gear and beefed up from the driveshaft back so I can launch harder... I cant wait...

Then again I have to drive my car to work tomarrow through the wintery roads FTL .. I'll just try and keep it in one peice until then

US 13 is opening Feb 24 if anyone missed it  MIR Mar 1 and Capital Mar 2.  Should I go to the track or the dyno if I just want to baseline.

Unless you plan on tuning some things on the dyno, I would suggest track time...  Its fun AND you learn the vehicle

I agree the best way to baseline it is at the track, the dyno will help with tuning and such but won't tell you how your truck is going to react to the power that shows on the dyno...

the dyno can't compare to track time. you can learn alot more about the car by actual driving on the strip !! you can try things at the track you can't on a dyno !!!   my 2 cents   shadow   Shocked  Shocked

If it's a new combination, some chassis dyno time can save alot of trips to the track trying to sort and tune. With the dyno you work under controlled conditions and eliminate many variables that the track contains that can skew your data.

Yes, you can tune at the track which I have spent years doing. It's alot quicker to get a solid baseline on the chassis dyno, then use the track to make small tweaks as necxessary to maximize performance.

Even on the quickest days at the track, it's tough to get more than 6 or 8 runs in, max. You need to make at least 2 or 3 baseline runs before you make any changes, then another backup run or two for each and every change, so in one days time at the track, your not going to be able to do alot of tuning at once.

With the dyno you can make runs quickly one after the other, not waiting for others or oil downs. You also have a tool which will yield repeatable data collection so you can definately see a change from one pull to another. Sometimes at the track changes from one pass to another the results may be so small and may be covered up by some of the on track variables you have no control over, nor may even be aware of. You have to be careful with making tuning decisions on track, especially if it's a newer conbination with little data collected to resort back to from past runs.

The chassis dyno has a very good use in tuning, just not how some hobbyists use it to make three pulls, no tuning and get a number on a piece of paper. It's a tuning tool and use it for what it was designed to do.

BTW, I worked a full day with Charlie at Boozes back in 2004 and it was well worth the expense and effort. I'd like to take the car back again sometime this season.

I agree with ya Todd! With the right operator (like Charlie and a few others), you can gain more info in the one day than a handful of T&T's. Trying to do back to back test at the track is a hard one. The key is getting hooked up with somebody that is keen to the combo you have, be it n/a, nos, turbo, etc.

if this is a totally new set up & you have absolutely no idea of what you got [ engine wise] then you need to take it to the dyno to see whats what !  after you're pleased there, go to the track & have someone videotape your runs so you can see what the car is doing, this is extremely helpful. helped us go from a 10.08 to a 9.90 by seeing how the car was launching !   like 10 says, each is valuable, one just as important as the other, good luck !!! 10/ marc, i know you guys use carbs so tuning is more difficult, but i was truly amazed on how the fellow my brother has building/ tuning the car got it to this point this fast !!! first off some of the things on the car are one of a kind ! he put all the data into his computer & figured out what he needed to do to make it work!  his calculations were so close that when they put it on the dyno , he had it dead nuts within 2 pulls!!  he has it running high 9's on 93 oct. pumpgas!!! My understanding was that grosspeed2k4 had a stock 350 and at that point all the motor tuning wasn't needed, that is why I pointed him towards the track first, but true if it is a completely new setup then he shoud go to the dyno...

There's nothing wrong with that at all John. And if its just the truck thats new the track is a good choice.
I was more less speaking from shadows post that dyno's can't compare to the track. I've seen some amazing magic worked on them that couldn't be found at the track for different reasons. It can be a very powerful tool in the hands of the right person! Plus its alot easier seeing what everything is doing when you don't have to watch where your going! Grin

Yea, it's a real strange feeling sitting in the car and go to WOT and redline with the car sitting there going nowhere. It's rises up, stretches the straps and you hope they sure hold.  Shocked

The engine has a few mods I was not responsible for any of them. The previous owner did all of the work but only street drove it so I have no info it is basically like an all new combination.
