How much weight savings would there be in lbs. to goto Chrome Moly cage and aluminum sheetmetal instead of mild steel and steel tinwork in my 84 Camaro? Would it be worth 50lbs or more? And is there any weight savings in gutting the doors on the same car?

Rich-
Just in the cage alone is worth a 50lb weight savings in that car with the same cage. Then add the difference in the aluminum panels. But, why would you go through all that work and money for 50-75 lbs? Probably be cheaper to find more power, no?

i would think that is better to make the car as light as possible. a light car is easier to accelerate and has less wear on parts, etc. you can always add weight if you need. also, if you want to step up later the sfi specs for the fast cars all spec c/m.

Fast Fairmont is right about the wieght thing, better to get the car as lite as possible, but than you can add the wieght in the correct places to meet any wieght requirement,[thats why prostocker are all built lite then you see weight distibuted all over car,to meet min.]
to answer your question C/moly is 33% lighter than mild steel,
[ also a 25-5 car is allowed M/S]
but the one of the main reason for chrome moly is resale , we havent build any mild steel anything in close to 6 yrs, even roll bars have been C/m it worth the few hundred dollars more , down the road, its a better sale item,  bob

Yes, it is good to START with as light of a car as possible, and add weight where you need it. But, the question was, is it worth it to cut the entire cage out, rip all of the tin out of a car that is already built and awaiting an engine, just for 50-60 lbs? Yes we agree chromoly cages are the way to go, IF the car was not built yet and needs to be done. Why spend all that money cutting out a cage, ripping tin work out, redoing entire cage, and custom fabricating new tin work in aluminum, for the 50 lbs? Does what you gain exceed the benefit of the cost at this stage? I would think not. It would be cheaper and easier to find more horsepower, and besides, losing 50 lbs may not even help the car go that much faster. You want to lose weight, go with fiberglass body panels and add the weight in where you want it. That is like a customer coming to me with a fresh piece, and wanting to rip the top half apart to put a bigger intake valve in it for a couple more cfm a bench would give you, you won't even see it on the track, and would the cost benefit the power you might get?

you are correct that if the car is complete and you are just looking for a few pounds it would not be cost effective. on an origional build or upgrade it would be the way to go if funds permit.

gut the doors.. We are getting ready to start on the #2 car.  We are going to go with Chrome Moly cage 25- cert..  I'll let you know what weight we get out of the doors.  How much of the vent and heater box duct is left in your car. Inside firewall... SS cars brace the master cylinder from under the hood...Weight in the back is good.
