What would cause my timing to drop from 39 degrees at idle to about 26 degrees up off of idle? It is crank trigger with a 7AL-3. Any ideas?

First off is it possible that the gap in the pickup has varied? Is the wheel on concentric? This may sound stupid but can the pickup wire plug in either way? Plenty of voltage to it? Dont laugh at my responses, remember I am a cylinder head guy, I have no idea about electronics.

It is possible the pickup is rubbing the crank trigger wheel.

Do you have knock sensors? Detonation maybe?

No knock sensor. Just talked to MSD they said it could be because I powered the timing light up from my water pump wire. I will find out tonight.

Randy, check you PM's.
Do you have a timing computer or Retard box? Check your distributor gear for worn / missing teeth (that has happen to me before).
